Defining Moments

Defining moments. We all have them.

Moments that change the course of our lives.

Moments that propel us, if we allow them to, into new places, new processes, new ways of thinking and believing, that we didn’t even know we needed!

Moments that begin the process of true and lasting change in every area our lives.

One of my defining moments came several years ago in worship.

There I was, tears spilling down my face. Mouthing the words God is good, but not actually believing it.

You see, at the time, my knowledge of God’s goodness, my belief of God’s goodness, was totally dependent…on my circumstances.

Oh, I’d read lots of verses. Memorized even. I’d heard lots of messages and had lots of conversations, but my understanding, my belief, that God is good – all the way, all the time – wasn’t yet cemented in my heart. Wasn’t yet cemented in my life. Wasn’t yet at the very core of who I was.

Oh, it was there…at the surface. A thought. A nice thought. A thought I should believe. But somehow didn’t. Somehow couldn’t.

And so there I was, mouthing words I wanted to believe, but didn’t. Not yet.

That day, that day in worship, longing to believe, longing to know, longing to experience God’s goodness in my life. Not in someone else’s. Not only in the happy moments. Not only when things felt like they were going well. But in every moment. Of every day!

That day was part of a whole group of days and weeks and months and years that have changed my life – forever!

Days and weeks and months and years of allowing God to reveal His goodness to me. Allowing Him to begin to heal my heart and heal my mind. Allowing Him to love me. Through His people. Through His word. Through personal encounters with Him.

To begin to dismantle the lie that God’s goodness is dependent on my circumstances. To begin to dismantle the lie that God’s goodness is dependent on anything other than God Himself!

And so today I want to encourage us. All of us!

Whether you believe whole-heartedly that God is good. Or whether you believe, like I did, that God’s goodness is based on you, or your circumstances or anything other than God Himself – to go deeper!

To go deeper!

To allow God to change your heart. To allow God to change your mind. To allow God to change your life!

To allow His heart to meld with yours! To allow His thoughts to transform yours. To allow His goodness to totally envelope you. Totally encompass you. Totally change everything about you!

Yes, today is the day to go deeper!

O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting. 1 Chronicles 16:34

For the LORD is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting and His faithfulness to all generations. Psalm 100:5

Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. James 1:17

O taste and see that the LORD is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! Psalm 34:8
